Historically there have been two main AI research tracks – symbolic AI (logic) and sub-symbolic AI (machine learning, neural networks, etc.) – but the recent resurgence of interest in AI is focused almost exclusively on machine learning. Why? Human intelligence combines conscious logical reasoning with subconscious pattern recognition. Are we missing even bigger AI opportunities by overlooking symbolic AI? Internet-scale computing and Big Data breathed new intelligence into machine learning – can it do the same for symbolic AI? Martin Lambert’s presentation provides a working introduction to symbolic AI, contrasts its capabilities with machine learning, and demonstrates a modern Internet-enabled fault diagnostic symbolic AI software-as-a-service.
Martin Lambert has a DPhil from Oxford University, was founder/CTO of information security startup SealedMedia (acquired by Oracle) and teaches ungrateful AIs at exvisory.com.
